If you just finished Montana Reckoning, first of all—thank you.

One of my favorite things about writing the Stark Brothers of Montana series was creating a place that felt like home. Wide-open skies. Family ranches. Small towns where everyone knows everyone else's business. Cowboys who'd rather fix a fence than talk about their feelings. And, of course, the kind of romance that grows slowly until you can't imagine the characters apart.

Whenever readers tell me they've finished Montana Reckoning, one of the questions I hear most is:

"What should I read next?"

So I thought I'd share some of my favorite Montana romances. These aren't all exactly like Montana Reckoning, but they capture many of the same things I love reading—beautiful western settings, unforgettable families, emotional love stories, and heroes who feel right at home beneath the Big Sky.

1. Indigo Ridge

Author: Devney Perry

I

If I had to recommend just one contemporary Montana romance to readers, this would probably be it.

Indigo Ridge kicks off Devney Perry's wildly popular The Edens series, centered around a powerful Montana ranching family in the fictional town of Quincy. It's equal parts small-town romance, family saga, and romantic suspense, with plenty of chemistry between the sheriff and a local rancher.

You'll love it if you enjoyed:

  • Family-owned ranches
  • Strong community ties
  • Protective heroes
  • Beautiful Montana scenery
  • A little mystery alongside the romance

Devney Perry has become one of the defining voices in modern Montana romance, and for good reason.

2. Big Sky River

Author: Linda Lael Miller

Linda Lael Miller helped define western contemporary romance long before cowboy romances exploded in popularity.

Set in Parable, Montana, Big Sky River follows a divorced cowboy trying to rebuild his life while unexpectedly finding love.

Expect:

  • Cowboys
  • Ranch life
  • Mature characters
  • Small-town charm
  • Plenty of heart

This is comfort reading at its best.

3. Montana Sky

Author: Nora Roberts

Some books become classics because they simply get everything right.

Montana Sky follows three half-sisters who unexpectedly inherit one of Montana's largest ranches. To receive their inheritance, they must live together—and run the ranch—for an entire year.

Along the way they discover family, healing, danger, and love.

If your favorite part of Montana Reckoning was the importance of family legacy and protecting the land, you'll probably adore this novel.

4. Juniper Hill

Author: Devney Perry

The second book in The Edens may actually be my favorite.

Single mother Memphis Ward arrives in Quincy looking for a fresh start and takes a job at a local lodge. There she meets Knox Eden, the quiet, dependable chef who slowly becomes much more than a friend.

Rather than relying on dramatic twists, this romance shines because of its emotional honesty and wonderfully developed characters.

You'll love it if you enjoy:

  • Single-mom romance
  • Small-town healing
  • Quiet heroes
  • Found family
  • Cozy Montana settings

5. The Coppersmith Farmhouse

Author: Devney Perry

If there's a common thread running through Devney Perry's books, it's that her Montana communities feel wonderfully real.

The first novel in the Jamison Valley series follows Gigi, who escapes an abusive marriage with her young daughter and starts over in Prescott, Montana. There she meets Jess, a local rancher whose steady kindness slowly helps her rebuild her life.

It's an emotional, hopeful story that reminds us love can arrive when we least expect it.

6. Big Sky Country

Author: Linda Lael Miller

Linda Lael Miller has been writing western romance for decades, and her Parable, Montana series remains one of the genre's cornerstones.

Big Sky Country follows rancher Hutch Carmody as an old flame unexpectedly returns to town. Together they must confront old wounds while deciding whether they deserve a second chance.

Readers looking for mature characters, authentic ranch life, and heartfelt romance won't be disappointed.

7. Wild Montana Skies

Author: Susan May Warren

If you're looking for something that blends romance with adventure, this is a wonderful choice.

Set near Glacier National Park, Wild Montana Skies follows search-and-rescue pilot Kacey Fairing as she returns home to Montana after years away. There she reconnects with Ben King, a former smokejumper, while facing both dangerous rescues and unresolved feelings from the past.

While this novel leans more toward romantic suspense than traditional cowboy romance, the breathtaking Montana setting makes it an easy recommendation for readers who simply can't get enough of Big Sky Country.

Why Montana Keeps Calling Me Back

As both a reader and an author, I can't seem to stay away from Montana.

There's something about the combination of rugged mountains, winding rivers, working ranches, and close-knit communities that creates the perfect backdrop for romance. Characters have room to breathe, to heal, and to discover who they really are.

It's also a place where family matters. Where neighbors become lifelong friends. Where the landscape is beautiful enough to make you slow down and appreciate what's important.

Those are the feelings I hoped to capture while writing Montana Reckoning—and they're exactly what I love finding in the books on this list.
